TUBAL LIGATION VERSUS VASECTOMY

In church today, the pastor told us a story about a couple who had two children and did not want to have more children. The husband decided that his wife get a tubal ligation (a surgical procedure in which the woman's fallopian tubes are blocked, tied or cut) so that they would not have any more children. The wife was against this because she was not ready to under any procedure. This became a serious issue in the marriage that almost led to the breakup of the marriage and they eventually ended up seeking counseling in the church.

This is where the story gets interesting, the man thought that the pastor was going to take sides with him. However, the pastor took a different approach. He said to the man, "Sir, why don't you take one for the team". If the woman can do it, then you can do it too. If you don't want any more kids, why don't you undergo a vasectomy (this is considered a permanent method of birth control where the vas deferens from each testicle is clamped, cut or sealed). The man was shocked and his reaction was funny....He could not go through with the procedure. In the end, neither one had any procedures done and they ended up getting pregnant again 10 years later.

My question is this: If a man says he doesn't want to have more children, he should be able to get a vasectomy right? Why do they not encourage it? why are men not keen on trying it? Women have to do so much with their bodies and its crazy. God forbid you to lose your kids, you want to be able to have more children right? But if you have your tubes tied, will your spouse still stick with you through thick and thin?

I posed the question to my mother and she says the reason why a spouse might kick against doing it is because of the fear of the unknown. To me, it boils down to trust issues and my conclusion was, If a couple decides they do not want to have more kids, then they should both have the vasectomy and tubal ligation done. That way it eliminates any future controversy.

I want to hear from people and get their opinions. How do you decide who gets the snip? Women think birth control is their responsibility, but it is time for men to take contraceptive responsibilities as well. Remember if you choose to tie your tubes, make sure you weigh your options as this is permanent and you must be certain of your decision. DON'T JUST DO IT BECAUSE YOUR SPOUSE DOESN'T WANT MORE CHILDREN, DO IT BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT MORE CHILDREN....DO IT FOR YOU....
